We Condemn Terrorism

Terrorism is a flat denial to human progress and civilisation. We condemn terrorism from the core of our heart and with all the strength at our command. Like many others, we had kept our fingers crossed in apprehension, not believing though it could happen on our own soil. The dastardly attack on September 23, 2002 on Swaminarayan Akshrdham temple at Ahmedabad(Gujarat), India, is yet another blow but it makes us more determined to fight the menace of terrorism. Reports appearing in the media were indeed frightening. In this context and in the contemporary world of seize mentality, random attacks, senseless violence against innocent citizens, there could not perhaps have been a better occasion to “commemorate” than September 11, 2001. And that is what the IISSM had done when the Kolkata Chapter of the IISSM organised a Seminar on the need for strengthening banking security in the context of terrorist threats.

As we all know, the course of history, one can say the course of civilization, has changed and continues to be changing following the terrorist attack on the twin towers in New York on September 11 last year. If nothing else, this incident has demonstrated the most horrendous face of terrorism - its ugly transnational character. The world has been forced to accept how vicious religious fundamentalism, in this case Islamist fundamentalist urge, could convert itself on what it perceives to be genuine grievances against the USA. That the terrorist involved had planned this action in most elaborate details and over a period of time is now beyond doubt. It is a different matter that all these preparations went undetected or rather, as we are now made to believe, unpursued.

Be that as it may, September 11, 2001 has made people or those who matter, sit on the edge. Perhaps this rude shock was necessary to make people aware of the implications of terrorism and the need for appreciating security concerns and make some preparations to face eventualities of different magnitude.

We once again condemn terrorism.

Best regards,
Yours sincerely,
