A National Calamity:

Tagore 'home' violated, Nobel medal, heirlooms stolen - No clues yet but evidence of neglect, inside job; high-tech theft alarm didn't work, no director, no administrator

Santiniketan - March 25, 2004 - It had been declared an "institution of national importance," The Visva Bharati community found this morning that from the special glass case of Tagore's memorial museum, priceless heirlooms, including his 1913 gold Nobel medallion, numerous pens he used, and the legendary watch (sold by him while raising funds for Santiniketan) were missing. In all, as many as 35-40 articles were stolen. The museum probably has one of the tightest security set-ups. There is no clue as to who were behind it but there was enough evidence to show not only neglect and apathy by the institute staff but also possible involvement. In 1975, the museum, known as Bichitra Bhavan, was equipped with an alarm system that activated a siren which could be heard in a 4-km radius, and there is a standby generator to ensure constant power supply to this unit. But last night, none of this worked. The security of such a treasure trove was left to two armed guards of the West Bengal Police and a couple of the university's own Watch and Ward staff. Four of them have been detained.
