Kalam: Music and dance can fight terrorism
New Delhi - President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Sunday night wondered whether
music and dance could become a tool for ending the menace of terrorism. "I
was thinking whether there is any alternative solution other than military,
economic and judicial approach to end this problem," he said adding India
had a rich civilisational heritage of 5,000 years blending literature,
music, dance and dramatics. The President, speaking on the occasion of
Rukmini Devi Arundale's birth centenary celebrations, said the experience of
listening and seeing great exponents had led him to think whether they could
be used as tools for ensuring global peace.

China endorses private property
Beijing: China's parliament amended the constitution on Sunday to protect
private property, a landmark move that waters down the Communist ideology of
the world's most populous nation. Analysts said the move reflected the
party's desire to maintain its grip on power while adapting to wrenching
social change wrought by 25 years of economic reform that have made the
private sector one of the key pillars of the booming economy. The
constitution now put private property on an equal footing with public
property. "It's significant for a socialist regime that says it's still
socialist or Communist to recognize more than before the role of the private
economy," a Western diplomat said.

Global warming the biggest problem, says British
expert
Chennai - March 19, 2004 - "Global warming is the biggest and most serious
problem faced by us in this century. Climatic change is happening and its
effects are real. If we do not take this seriously, it will have serious
consequences that will affect the generations to come," said Sir David
Anthony King, Chief Scientific Adviser to the U.K. Government. Sir David
said the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere had been rising at alarming
levels in the last 60.000 years. If the carbon-dioxide level doubles, the
ambient atmosphere will go up by 5 degrees Celsius which would lead to
melting of polar ice caps, rise in sea level, and as a consequence there
would be dramatic changes in the map of the world. More than 160,000 people
die worldwide every year due to the side effects of climatic change. Fusion
power plants and hydrogen fuelled transport systems would prove to be safer
options for the future generation. Solar energy and tidal energy are the
other potential energy sources in the years to come. The ecological and
economic damage arising out of global warming would be disastrous to
agriculture, which is the mainstay.

Who sent the first email? When?
The first email was sent in 1971 between two PDP-10 computers in Cambridge
(USA) by an engineer Ray Tomlinson, a partner in the development of the
first major computer network Arpanet, the precursor of today's Internet. The
first email was addressed by Tomlinson to himself and was supposed to have
contained the message Testing 1-2-3. He was also the first person to use the
@ symbol in the email address. Soon, Tomlinson's ideas were generalized and
incorporated in the electronic mail software on Arpanet by the end of 1972.

Who invented the Scissors
Scissors were invented thousands of years ago (roughly 1500 BC) in ancient
Egypt. Early scissors have been found in ancient Egyptian ruins. These early
scissors were made from one piece of metal (unlike modern scissors, which
are made from two cross-blades which pivot around a fulcrum). Modern
cross-bladed scissors were invented in ancient Rome (roughly 100 AD). Early
scissors were not in common use until much later, in the 1500's (in Europe).
