Shri D.C. Nath, IPS (Retd.), former Special Director, Intelligence Bureau and now working as the Executive President & CEO of International Institute of Security and Safety Management (IISSM), has, under the aegis of the India First Foundation, a trust pledged towards projecting India's civilisational past, written a book titled "Intelligence Imperatives for India". The then Deputy Prime Minister of India released the book, along with four other publications, at a function on February 28, 2004.

The book deals with threat perception and analysis in respect of India in the broader context of international geopolitical situation. The different chapters of it are:

  • India's Destiny
  • Vision For India
  • Challenges In The Process: External Factors
  • Internal Security Perspective
  • Security And Internal Economy
  • Internal Security Mechanism
  • Nuclear Dynamics: India's Vulnerability
  • Terrorism: Indian Perspective
  • Maritime Security: Indian Perspective
  • Intelligence
  • Science & Technology In Security And Intelligence
  • Need To Build On Core Competencies & Inner Strengths

A critic has said, "The book is unique in the sense it covers at one place all aspects of security, such as, interplay of national security interests vis-à-vis overall geo-strategic scenario, especially in the context of neo-terrorism, information security, maritime security, environmental security and nuclear vulnerability of India." Mr. K.C. Pant, Former Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Government of India, who has written the 'Foreword', concluded, "The author has brought out in a lucid style the various facets of the fast changing security environment and the role of intelligence in taking suitable measures to protect national interest. I have no doubt that this book would be useful for experts as well as students of national security."

The President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam has observed, "Thank you for sending me a copy of your book 'Intelligence Imperatives for India' with a number of references to the mission of Developed India. Particularly, I liked chapters 5 and 6 of the book. My best wishes."

Shri M.K. Narayanan, a former Director of IB, currently Special Advisor to the Prime Minister and otherwise a very well-known strategic thinker, has said, "I am still digesting the contents of this masterpiece, but find that in the process I have been outpaced by dignitaries and celebrities including the Hon'ble President of India. May I, therefore, add my own humble accolade to that of many others on this very detailed and carefully structured effort which attempts to explain Intelligence and the intelligence mystique to the people at large. My congratulations to you on a very outstanding effort."

Further, an independent scholar in the UK, Mr. Raj Lakha, Chief Executive, Safety Solutions (UK) Ltd., who is now primarily engaged in imparting training to blue-chip organisations, local and national government bodies on safety, risk, disaster and business continuity management, has also observed, " My general comments, if you may allow me, are from the perspective of a safety/risk practitioner and a political economist. I would suggest that students world-wide of security, safety and crisis mgt as well as comparative political economy would do well to read it and understand the cultural forces that shape a nation's threat and risks level. An exceptional publication that adds value not just to Indian but global wisdom. A must for all students of the social sciences and policy advisers with an interest in safety and security issues."

While academics and professionals may benefit from this exercise, the contents of the book would be equally relevant to cross sections of citizens having interest of India at heart. Incidentally, the book has since found a place in different Libraries, such as, at Jawahar Lal Nehru University, the Indian Institute of Defence Studies & Analyses and United Service Institutions of India.

The publishers of the book are the India First Foundation (12-E, Firoz Shah Road, New Delhi - 110 001, Tel: 23359622 / 23359722, Email: editor@indiafirstfoundation.org).
