It has become well accepted in the Western world that recent years have demonstrated the state of war existing between Islamist radicals and most everyone else. A new independent film, Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West, is an excellent visual reminder that terrorism has morphed into a religious struggle. This DVD uses images from various Arab television outlets, along with quotations from former terrorists, journalists, government officials, family members of jihadis (holy warriors), independent analysts and experts, academics, and others to make the point that while most Muslims do not support terrorism, those that do are both dangerous and extremely committed to imposing their will on the world.
An especially interesting thread running through the film is a comparison of the “propaganda of Islam” with the techniques and messages used by the Nazis as they attempted to persuade the world that theirs was the true vision of life. The film demonstrates the parallels between them, as it also demonstrates the danger.
Although the film offers little new apart from the snippets of Arab television that probably were not widely viewed outside the Middle East, it is an excellent compilation and summary. It’s length will allow it to be used in training and education courses and even those who have closely followed developments in the terrorism field will find it worth the time to view it.
